Everyone likes the forecast to be pleasant when they’re about to play a round of golf, but sometimes, you’re going to get some real scorchers. Being outside on a very hot day can be tiring at best and dangerous at worst if you’re unprepared. You can still play golf in hot weather, provided you’re practical about it. Follow these tips to keep those hot summer afternoon games safe and enjoyable for everyone.

1. Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is crucial on a hot day, no matter what you’re doing. Golf can work up a sweat, so you need to keep a few bottles of water with you in your cart and drink from them often. Recognize the signs of dehydration: lightheadedness, fatigue, clammy skin, and, as it progresses, confusion. If you see someone becoming dehydrated or you feel yourself weakening, you need to get into an air-conditioned building and start upping your fluid intake.

2. Use Sun Protection

Shielding yourself from the sun as much as you can will help you immensely. Of course, many greens are largely out in the open air without much in the way of structure or trees for shelter. So you’ll need to wear a wide-brimmed sun hat, plenty of high-SPF sunscreen, UV-rated sunglasses, and light-colored, breathable clothing to ward off sunburn and heatstroke.

3. Take More Breaks

You’re going to get tired more quickly while playing golf in the heat. Don’t be afraid to take more rest breaks, whether that means retreating to the clubhouse, sitting in your cart with a fan, or taking refuge under a big, shady tree. It’s also wise to limit how much you play during the peak of the heat in the mid-afternoon; try to play your games during the morning or evening instead.
