A key part of golf cart ownership is maintaining the brakes. These essential parts play a crucial role in the safety of those in and around the golf cart. The following tips cover some simple do-it-yourself tasks. For more information or to get help with golf cart maintenance, contact the experts at Dever Golf Car Sales.

Clean Them Regularly

Use a jack to lift the axle that the brakes are on. Remove the wheels and brake drums from the studs. With an aerosol brake parts cleaner, blow away any accumulated debris off of the shoes. Dampen a rag with WD-40 and wipe away any remaining debris. It's also important to clean the adjustment spring with a solvent, then add a lubricant.

Adjust Them As Needed

Older golf carts may need their brakes adjusted every once in a while.

Look for a screw or bolt on the back of the drum. Turn it until the shoe is pressed against the drum. As you do this, you can spin the wheel with your free hand. Once you encounter resistance in the spinning, back off of the adjusting.

Don't Neglect the Tires

A golf cart's tire health affects the health of the brakes. Keep the tires inflated to the right air pressure and keep the moving parts of the wheels lubricated.
