There are many different aspects to the game of golf that a new golfer has to learn in order to master the sport. One of the most important things that you’ll need to know is the golf handicap system and how you can improve your own handicap to make yourself a better golfer. We’ve outlined the basics on handicaps below and provided you with some tips to up your game.

History

A handicap refers to the measurement of a golfer’s ability to play the game, which is given to the player using a World Handicap System that was created in 2020 with the assistance of The R&A and the USGA. While the term “handicap” was not applied to this measurement until the 1800s, the idea was instigated in Scotland in the 1700s.

Necessity

Because every golfer has a different skill level and many golfers of different skill levels play together, it’s important to ensure that the competition is fair, which is why each player is assigned a handicap. A golf club can usually provide a handicap to its members, but there are places that you can get your handicap for free. Professional golfers don’t usually adhere to these measurements, though.

Scoring

A golfer with a handicap of zero is considered a “scratch golfer,” or experienced player, while a golfer with a handicap of 18 is a “bogey golfer,” who is less experienced. Handicaps can fall between zero and over 55, with most male golfers falling between 9 and 18, and most female golfers falling between 24 and 30 on the USGA scale.
