Typically, people ride golf carts on courses and in gated communities, but if you can make your golf cart street-legal, then you can take it on city streets in some areas. It’s important to understand the traffic laws that apply to golf carts before you set out so that you don’t end up getting a ticket or endangering other drivers by riding on roads that are forbidden to you. Here are our tips on riding your golf cart on public roads.

Know Your Local Laws

It’s a good idea to check with your local DMV about their rules regarding what types of vehicles can operate on which roads. Generally speaking, you’re not going to be able to ride your golf cart on high-speed thoroughfares, including interstates or highways, and some parts of the city may be too dangerous to navigate in a golf cart.

Always use your turn signals and lights as needed, maintain a proper following distance, stay in your lane, and exercise caution while driving your golf cart on public roads. Just because your vehicle is a little different doesn’t mean that you get to flout the rules.

Understand Speed Issues

Golf carts, no matter how powerful they are, typically can’t reach speeds much higher than 20 miles per hour, which means that any roads with a higher speed limit are off-limits. Even on slower roads, however, you need to be careful, because larger vehicles may be speeding on these thoroughfares.
