While the first golf clubs were made of wood, metal clubs have since become the standard. This can be a problem, as metal clubs tend to corrode under certain conditions. While the use of corrosion-resistant materials like aluminum and stainless steel has grown, golf club rust is still the bane of many golfers’ existence. That’s why Dever Golf Car Sales & Rentals has created this guide to cleaning rust off your golf clubs.

Use Soda

If you catch the corrosion in its earliest stages, you may be able to clean it off by soaking your clubs in soda. As strange as it sounds, the high acidity levels will eat away at the rust and leave only the metal club behind. Once you’re done soaking, dry your clubs off with a clean cloth and monitor them for further rust damage.

Soap and Water

For more severe cases of golf club corrosion, soda might not be enough. In these cases, we recommend soaking your clubs in soapy water for several minutes. This will help break up the corrosion for easier removal. If you’re having trouble getting into the smaller crevices, use a toothbrush. Once you’re done, rinse off the clubs with water.

Lemon Juice, Vinegar, or Baking Soda

Commonly used household products such as lemon juice, vinegar, and baking soda can also be effective at removing corrosion from golf clubs. As with soap and water, you’ll want to soak your clubs for an extended period before rinsing them off. However, it’s important that you take steps to dilute these cleaning products to ensure that you don’t accidentally harm your clubs.

Use a Quality Rust Remover Product

For the worst cases of golf club corrosion, you may need to turn to a strong rust remover product. These chemicals are very powerful, so you need to be careful about how you use them. Only let them sit on your clubs for a few minutes before rinsing them off, and always wear protective gear while handling these products.
